Horizontal Cotoneaster ‘Hessei’ (Cotoneaster horizontalis ‘Hessei’). Cotoneaster horizontalis ‘Hessei’ is an ornamental groundcover shrub highly prized for its spreading, dense, and well-structured habit, ideal for slopes, rockeries, and borders. This selection forms a low, even plant carpet, more compact and vigorous than the species type, offering excellent ground cover and a neat landscape effect. Its deciduous dark green foliage turns magnificent orange-red in autumn, extending its decorative interest late in the season. In spring, it produces small, discreet pale pink flowers, followed in autumn by an abundant fruiting of persistent bright red berries, very decorative and appreciated by wildlife.

To plant Horizontal Cotoneaster ‘Hessei’, choose a suitable exposure: full sun. The recommended soil is: well-drained, tolerant. Water the root ball before planting and ensure water can drain away after planting. During establishment, check the soil moisture by hand before watering again. Spread mulch around the base, leaving the crown clear. Avoid systematic fertilizer applications without considering soil richness. In Quebec, choose a period when the ground is thawed and easy to work. In hot weather, monitor newly planted specimens more frequently.

Allow for a width of 1.5–2.5 m (5–8 ft) to plan this plant's space in the garden. The indicated height of 0.5–0.8 m (1.5–2.5 ft) helps choose its position relative to neighboring plants. Maintain access to the base for weeding, checking moisture, and removing damaged parts. Combine this variety with plants that have compatible light and water requirements. If considering a container, first ensure its volume and drainage are suitable for root development. Roots in pots are more exposed to cold than those planted in the ground.
