Beans grow best in light, organic, well-drained soil with a pH of about 6.5. Plant seeds 1 inch deep and 3 inches apart in rows 18 to 28 inches apart. Sow only after the soil has warmed to at least 60 degrees Fahrenheit (16 degrees Celsius). Sow every 10 days until mid-July for continuous harvests. Maintain even moisture, especially during flowering and pod formation. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers to promote pod production. Germination occurs in about 8 days.
