Florence Fennel is an annual herb producing a bulbous base with a mild anise flavour, ideal for salads or cooked dishes. Above, fine, delicate foliage rises up to 75cm high. Valued for its culinary versatility, it also attracts beneficial insects to the garden. Be careful: its roots can inhibit the growth of beans and tomatoes if planted too close.

How to grow:
Direct sow seeds outdoors in mid to late May in a sunny spot with average soil. Sow 3mm deep and space 2.5cm apart, then thin to 25-30cm. Alternatively, start seeds indoors 8 weeks before last frost at 21°C for germination in 10-14 days. Grow on at a slightly cooler temperature before hardening off and transplanting out after frost. Direct sowing is preferred for best results.
