Strawberry ‘Rosalyne’ (Fragaria × ananassa ‘Rosalyne’) is a Canadian everbearing, ornamental and edible variety, selected in Quebec by Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada. Its large to very large reddish-pink flowers bloom from early summer until the first frosts. They then produce red strawberries with medium-firm, fine, sweet, and low-acid flesh. Its spreading habit and moderate vigor make it suitable for edible borders, window boxes, and containers. This long succession of flowers and fruits allows for color, biodiversity, and small harvests in a confined space.

Install ‘Rosalyne’ in full sun in soil rich in organic matter, moist, and very well-drained. Place the crown exactly at soil level to prevent rot. Water at the base when the surface begins to dry, especially during flowering and fruit enlargement, but never let water stagnate. Light fertilization for small fruits supports production without causing excessive foliage. Mulch with clean straw, remove damaged fruits, and maintain good air circulation. In containers, monitor moisture more frequently during hot periods.

Harvest strawberries when they are fully red to enjoy their medium to high sweetness and low acidity. Production begins very early and continues in waves until the first frost when water, light, and nutrition remain consistent. ‘Rosalyne’ was selected for its winter hardiness and is resistant to leaf spot, but it remains moderately susceptible to leaf blight. In Zone 4–8, straw protection helps the crowns survive the Quebec winter. Also, monitor for slugs, aphids, spider mites, gray mold, and root rot, then promptly remove affected tissues.

Watering

Water regularly to keep the soil moist but not saturated, especially during flowering, fruit development, and when young plants are rooting. Aim for about 1 inch (2.5 cm) of water per week, more in sandy soil or hot weather, taking rainfall into account. Water in the morning directly at the soil level or with a soaker hose. Avoid wetting the flowers and fruits, then allow the surface to air out to limit gray mold and leaf spots.

Soil type

Choose a soil rich in organic matter, loose, fresh, and perfectly drained, with a slightly acidic pH of about 5.5 to 6.5. Incorporate mature compost before planting without over-enriching with nitrogen. Place the crown exactly at soil level: a buried crown risks rotting, while exposed roots dry out. In spring, plant 'Rosalyne' in a drained container or gradually uncover overwintered crowns. Keep the crown at soil level and remove only dead leaves. During growth, water at the base in the morning, fertilize lightly according to the label, and rotate pots for balanced exposure. Red-pink flowers appear over a long period; leave them for pollinators and pick fruits as soon as they are fully colored. Remove damaged berries, diseased foliage, and misplaced runners without severely pruning the clump. In hot weather, check hanging baskets daily as they dry out quickly. In autumn, reduce fertilization and continue watering until dormancy. After several light frosts, cover in-ground crowns with airy straw. Move containers to a cold, protected location or insulate their sides. The following spring, replace plants that are weakly regrowing or whose flowering has significantly decreased. For best results, regularly observe plants and adapt care to garden conditions. Good air circulation and morning watering reduce foliage and fruit problems. Always keep the crown visible and promptly remove damaged fruit.
