Did you know?

Chantenay carrots were developed in France in the 19th century to provide a shorter, stronger root, perfect for clayey and compact soils . Their high beta-carotene content makes them an excellent source of vitamin A.

Spread : Thick, stocky root, ideal for heavy soils
Plant height : 30 to 40 cm
Quantity per pack : ± 500 seeds
Companion plants : Alliums, rosemary, sage, beans, lettuce, peas, peppers, tomato
Enemy plants : Coriander, dill, parsnips

Cultivation method

Sowing is done directly in open ground as soon as the soil is workable, because carrots do not tolerate transplantation.

For a staggered harvest , sow successively from spring to mid-summer . Well-drained, stone-free soil will promote well-formed, uniform roots .

Water sparingly but regularly to prevent split roots . A light mulch helps retain moisture and reduces weed pressure .

Harvesting and conservation

Harvest carrots when they have reached their optimum size and deep orange colour . Once fully ripe, they can be stored in the ground for up to 3 weeks in summer and kept longer in winter under good mulch .

For longer storage, store them in slightly damp sand in a cool place . They can also be frozen after blanching or made into juices and purees.
