Organic late-season 'Mammoth Red Rock' cabbage (Brassica oleracea) from Gaia seed company, a large, long-keeping, purple-red heritage variety

'Mammoth Red Rock' cabbage develops vigorous, well-anchored plants , forming large, firm, and very dense round to slightly flattened heads . The heads typically reach 2.3 to 3.6 kg in weight and 20 to 25 cm in diameter , with a deep purple-red heart surrounded by thick, protective foliage. The crisp texture and naturally sweet flavor are further enhanced by exposure to cooler temperatures.

A heritage variety dating back to 1889 , 'Mammoth Red Rock' cabbage has earned an exceptional reputation for reliability and consistency . As early as 1904, it was already being described as one of the most reliable red cabbages ever introduced. Its remarkable storage capacity makes it a preferred choice for late harvests and winter storage, for both home gardeners and market gardeners.

Sow at a depth of 1.2 cm (½ inch ), spacing the plants 25 to 45 cm (10 to 18 inches) apart depending on the desired size , and the rows 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 inches) apart, in rich, deep, well-drained soil .

Cabbage prefers full sun (level 3) and consistent watering (level 3) . Regular moisture promotes the formation of large, tightly packed heads.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the outer leaves begin to droop and the heads are firm to the touch. This cabbage stores particularly well at 0°C , with a humidity of around 95% and good air circulation, allowing for extended storage throughout the winter .
