Organic 'Emerald Gem' melon (Cucumis melo) from the seed company Gaia, an old-fashioned musky melon with fragrant orange flesh and a spicy taste

The 'Emerald Gem' melon, a heritage variety developed by W. Atlee Burpee (1886) , is still celebrated for its incredible succulence—" succulent beyond measure ," he said. Its round, 2- to 3-pound fruits have juicy, sweet, orange flesh with a remarkable musky richness and an aroma reminiscent of spicy cinnamon . The slightly reticulated, dark green skin conceals a meltingly soft and intensely fragrant texture. Its short harvest window requires attention: pick when the skin is well reticulated and the fruits slide naturally off the vine . Also known as Netted Gem , it remains one of the most flavorful of the old-fashioned musky melons.

Farming method

Soak the seeds for up to 24 hours in lukewarm water and lightly scarify them to improve germination. Sow directly 1 to 2 weeks after the last frost , or start seeds indoors 4 weeks before planting out . Sow the seeds 1.25 cm deep. Place in full sun (level 3) with moderate watering (level 2). Space plants 60 to 90 cm apart and rows 150 cm apart. Germination takes 4 to 10 days at temperatures between 18 and 32 °C (optimum 23–30 °C).

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when:
• The skin becomes reticulated and takes on a warmer hue,
• the fruit detaches easily from the vine (“full slip”).

Ripe melons can be stored for up to 4 weeks in the refrigerator.
