The 'Petit Gris de Rennes' melon, nicknamed the "crème de la crème" of French cantaloupes, is a heritage variety cultivated for nearly 400 years , first noticed in the garden of the Bishop of Rennes. Its round fruits, weighing 2 to 3 lbs , have a rind speckled with mustard and olive , hence its name "petit gris" (little gray) before ripening. Inside, the exceptionally sweet, dense, and fragrant orange flesh evokes notes of brown sugar . A very flavorful, compact, and reliable variety, it remains one of the best melons for northern gardens seeking outstanding taste.
