Organic 'Boar's Tooth' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, a striped mahogany Roma, fleshy, elegant and extraordinarily tasty

The 'Boar's Tooth' tomato is a remarkable heirloom variety, as beautiful as it is versatile. Indeterminate and productive, it offers an abundance of 2- to 3-oz . fruits in early to mid-season. These elongated fruits have a mahogany-brick tip and are delicately striped with green . Their flesh is dense and meaty , with a rich, deep, slightly acidic flavor : the perfect balance between sweetness and freshness. This intensity makes it a sublime tomato to enjoy fresh… but also an exceptional base for very rich, concentrated, and aromatic homemade sauces .

Like many heart-shaped or elongated Roma varieties, this plant has "airy" and scattered foliage , giving it a light and graceful appearance while ensuring a very good yield. A tomato that is decorative, gourmet, and generous—ideal for a change from the classic Roma and adding a handcrafted touch to the vegetable garden.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting out . Plant seeds 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in light potting mix at a temperature of 23–29 °C for germination in 5–10 days . Reduce water and nitrogen during hardening off to promote strong structure.

Transplant once the risk of frost has passed. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24–36") apart with 120 to 180 cm (4–6') between rows. Plant in full sun , water regularly ( level 3 ), and provide sturdy staking , which is essential to support the generous clusters of elongated fruit.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the tomato fully displays its striped mahogany color and a slight yield to the touch. To prepare for harvesting earlier, pick the fruits that have shown their first hint of color , then let them ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store at 12–21°C , under 95% relative humidity , to maintain their firm texture.
