Organic 'Charbonnière' tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) from the seed company Gaia, an old purple variety with dark shoulders, rich, juicy and deeply aromatic

The 'Charbonnière' tomato is a rare heritage variety with a complex profile, combining two historical descriptions often grouped under the same name. In its most recognizable form, it has a champagne-pink skin with dark green shoulders , sweet, juicy, slightly peppery flesh, and small seed pockets — a characteristic typical of several old French tomatoes.

But 'Charbonnière' is also listed as a dark purple tomato similar to Cherokee Purple , cultivated by the Cherokee people before 1890, with a deep pinkish-purple skin and flesh , a rich flavor , firm and juicy flesh , and a slightly irregular shape. In both cases, it is clearly an indeterminate tomato, generous and with a remarkable flavor profile , combining sweetness, measured acidity, and aromatic depth.

It matures in approximately 63 days , making it one of the earliest heirloom purple tomatoes. A fascinating, complex variety full of old-fashioned charm.

Farming method

Sow indoors 6 to 8 weeks before planting out . Sow 3–6 mm (1/8–1/4") deep in a light potting mix, at a temperature of 23–29 °C for germination in 5–10 days . During the hardening-off period, reduce watering and nitrogen application to strengthen the seedlings.

Transplant after the last frost. Space plants 60 to 90 cm (24–36") apart, with 120 to 180 cm (4–6') between rows. Provide full sun , regular watering (level 3) , and sturdy staking , essential for this vigorous variety.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest when the fruit develops either a champagne pink with green shoulders or a deep, reddish-purple color , depending on the variety. To hasten the harvest, pick those that have already shown their first color , then let them ripen off the vine at 22°C or higher . Store between 12–21°C , at 95% relative humidity , to maintain their juiciness.
