Cultivation method:
To optimize germination , soak seeds for 12 hours in lukewarm water before sowing. Sow directly in the ground in late May , when the soil is well warmed. Plant seeds 1.5 cm (1/2") deep , spacing plants 30 cm (12") apart and rows 60 cm (24") apart. Germination occurs in 10 to 14 days at an optimum temperature of 23 °C (73 °F) . These sunflowers require full sun and good watering to ensure abundant flowering.
Harvest and uses:
Harvest the seeds once the flower heads are completely dry on their stems . To prevent birds and squirrels from nibbling on them before you do, place a brown paper bag over the drying flowers . Sunflower flowers are edible : their petals can be used to decorate salads and dishes , while the nutrient-rich seeds are excellent roasted and salted as a snack .
