Organic 'Velvet Queen' Sunflower
Organic 'Velvet Queen' sunflower (Helianthus annuus) from the seed company Gaia, a velvety purple bloom of striking elegance
The 'Velvet Queen' sunflower is an exceptional heirloom variety, prized for its large, crimson flowers with velvety petals that give it a deep, dramatic appearance. With flowers 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6") in diameter and an impressive height of up to 1.5 m (48 to 84"), this plant quickly becomes a spectacular focal point in borders or cut flower gardens. Vigorous and prolific, it attracts numerous pollinators and provides long-lasting blooms throughout the summer.
Its unique, darker hue compared to classic sunflowers brings a warm and sophisticated ambiance to the garden. Resilient and easy to grow, it adapts well to sunny and warm conditions. However, like other sunflowers, it slows the growth of plants planted too close together: it is recommended to give it sufficient space.

Farming method
Soak the seeds in warm water for up to 12 hours to improve germination. Sow directly outdoors in late May, at a depth of 1.2 cm (1/2"). Space plants 30 cm (12") apart and rows 60 cm (24") apart. Choose a very sunny location (level 3) and provide regular watering (level 3), especially during the early stages of growth.
Germination occurs in 10 to 14 days at temperatures between 21 and 28°C, with optimal performance around 23°C. Sunflowers reach maturity in approximately 100 days. As the plant slows the growth of neighboring plants, allow it at least 30 cm of clear space around it.
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest the seeds when the flower heads are completely dry on their stems. Place a brown paper bag around the head as it begins to ripen to protect it from birds and squirrels. The flowers can also be harvested for arrangements thanks to their striking beauty and velvety texture. The petals and young leaves are edible.
