Organic 'Tatsoï Asian Greens' (Brassica rapa) from Gaia seed company, a tender and glossy rosette perfect for salads and stir-fries

Tatsoi is a heritage Asian leafy green prized for its smooth, dark green, glossy leaves arranged in a low, compact rosette. Its supple texture and mild flavor make it ideal for salad mixes, stir-fries, and Asian soups. Harvested young, it is tender and delicious raw; when mature, it retains a pleasantly firm texture. Its rapid growth and remarkable cold tolerance make it a choice crop for spring, autumn, and even winter cultivation under tunnels, hardy down to -7°C.

Versatile, productive, and easy to grow, tatsoi adapts well to both home gardens and urban vegetable patches. It prefers cool temperatures and thrives in full sun or partial shade.

Farming method

Sow directly outdoors or transplant seedlings in early spring for best results. Plant 1.2 cm (1/2") deep, spacing plants 20 cm (8") apart and rows 30 to 38 cm (12 to 15") apart. Tatsoi prefers fertile, well-drained, and slightly moist soil with moderate watering (level 2). It grows well in full sun or partial shade (sun level 2).

Germination occurs in 4 to 10 days at a temperature of 15 to 18 °C, and maturity arrives quickly, in about 20 days.

Harvesting and preservation

Harvest the young leaves for salads or wait until the rosette is fully developed for a whole harvest. To prolong production, cut the outer leaves at the base. Store in the refrigerator in a plastic bag for up to 3 days.
