description
Irish Moss (Sagina subulata), offered here as seeds by Mossify, is a delicate and ornamental ground cover plant, prized for its fine texture, soft green foliage, and ability to create a dense and plush carpet of vegetation. Native to Western Europe, it is ideal for borders, paving gaps, rock gardens, terrariums, or even "moss art" compositions.
These premium seeds offer an 87% germination rate, guaranteeing uniform and vigorous emergence. Highly valued for its low growth and relative resistance to light foot traffic, Irish Moss creates a fresh, natural ambiance, reminiscent of shady woodlands and Celtic landscapes.
Average height: 2 to 5 cm
Quantity per packet: ± 250 seeds
Germination rate: 87%
Recommended uses: terrariums, green walls, paving stones, planters, indoor and outdoor decorative projects
Exposure: partial shade to full sun depending on ambient humidity
Ideal soil: light, cool, well-drained, slightly acidic to neutral
Cultivation method:
Sow the seeds on the surface of fine, moist potting soil without covering them, as they need light to germinate. Keep the soil consistently moist until germination, which occurs between 14 and 28 days depending on conditions. A temperature of 15 to 20°C will promote optimal germination. Once the seedlings are well-rooted, transplant them to their final location, spacing them 5 to 10 cm apart for a quick carpet effect. Water regularly but not excessively, as too much standing water can encourage the growth of competing mosses.
Harvesting and maintenance:
This moss requires very little maintenance. Remove plant debris and keep weed growth to a minimum. During dry periods, moderate watering is sufficient to keep it fresh. It may flower lightly in summer, producing discreet little star-shaped white flowers that add to its natural charm.
Why choose it?
Irish moss is perfect for natural or minimalist landscaping projects. It combines aesthetics, ease of cultivation, and adaptability, while offering an eco-friendly alternative to traditional grass. Thanks to its seed format, it allows you to cover large areas affordably while giving you complete control over the design of your green space.
