Latin name
Pyrus communis Patten
Common name
'Patten' Pear
Type
Fruit tree
Family
Rosaceae

Pyrus communis 'Patten' is a vigorous and hardy pear tree, well-suited to cold climates like that of Quebec, with proven resistance up to zone 3. Its upright to rounded habit forms a majestic tree that can reach 10 meters in height, suitable for spacious orchards or large-scale landscaping. It produces medium-sized pears (≈125 g) from the seventh year, yellowish-green with a coral-red blush, featuring white, juicy, sweet, and slightly tart flesh, perfect for fresh consumption, canning, and compotes. The white mid-May bloom attracts pollinators, and although self-sterile, 'Patten' is also an excellent pollinator for other cultivars. Cultivated in full sun and well-drained soil, it combines aesthetics, longevity, and fruit quality in traditional orchards.
