Seeds can be started indoors in a soilless medium in February, then transplanted outdoors later in spring. Sow directly outdoors from mid-April at a depth of 8-15mm, with 15mm spacing between seeds. Thin to 5cm for cooking onions or 7.5cm for sweet Spanish types. Bend flower stalks to redirect energy into bulb development. Onions prefer a sunny location with fertile, well-drained soil. Germination in 1-2 weeks.
