Beans prefer a light, organic, well-drained soil with a pH of about 6.5. Sow seeds only after the soil has reached a minimum temperature of 60°F (16°C). Plant 1 inch deep and 3 inches apart, in rows 18 to 28 inches apart. For a continuous harvest, plant seedlings every 10 days until mid-July. Maintain even watering, especially during flowering and pod formation. Limit the use of high-nitrogen fertilizers to prevent excess foliage. Handle plants only when dry to reduce disease. Germination occurs in about 8 days.
