Thunberg Spirea 'Mellow Yellow' (Spiraea thunbergii 'Mellow Yellow'). Spiraea thunbergii 'Mellow Yellow', commonly known as Thunberg spirea 'Mellow Yellow', is a deciduous shrub with a finely branched and slightly arching habit, appreciated for its bright yellow foliage and early flowering. From early spring, before or at the same time as the leaves appear, it is covered with a multitude of small, pure white flowers clustered along the branches, creating a very decorative airy effect. Its narrow, almost thread-like foliage emerges golden yellow in spring, turns chartreuse green in summer, then takes on coppery orange hues in autumn.
To plant Thunberg spirea 'Mellow Yellow', choose a suitable exposure: full sun. The recommended soil is: well-drained, tolerates ordinary soil. Water the root ball before planting and make sure that water can drain after planting. During establishment, check the moisture by hand before watering again. Spread mulch around the base, leaving the collar clear. Avoid systematic fertilizer applications without considering soil richness. In Quebec, choose a period when the soil is thawed and easy to work with.
Allow a width of 1.5 m (5 ft) to arrange this plant's space in the garden. The indicated height of 1.5 m (5 ft) helps choose its position relative to neighboring plants. Maintain access to the base for weeding, checking moisture, and removing damaged parts. Combine this variety with plants whose light and water needs are compatible. If you are considering a container, first check that its volume and drainage are suitable for root development. Roots in pots are more exposed to cold than those planted in the ground.
