A versatile and easy to grow aromatic herb

Summer savory (Satureja hortensis), offered by Semences OSC.

A fast-growing, aromatic annual, summer savory offers a delicious, subtle flavor that’s perfect for adding to your dishes. Its slender, bronze-green leaves can be used fresh or dried in salads, sauces, stews, and vinaigrettes. Ideal for growing in containers, this hardy herb grows to a height of 12 to 24 inches. Popular in traditional cooking and known as Bohnenkraut, it’s a must-have for lovers of authentic flavors.

Plant height: 30-60 cm
Days to harvest: 45-50 days
Degree of difficulty: Easy
Frost Tolerance: Frosty Soft
Companion plants: Beans, peas, tomatoes
Enemy plants: Onions
Suggested Uses: Seasonings, dressings, sauces, stews
Plant Type: Annual

Cultivation method:

Sow directly into the ground from mid-April to late May in well-drained soil in full sun. Plant seeds 1/4 inch (6mm) deep and space 1/4 inch (6mm) apart, then thin to 8-12 inches (20-30cm) once the plants have germinated. Avoid transplanting as this herb does not like its roots disturbed. Harvest just before flowering, cutting back the plants to encourage new growth.

The availability of our seeds varies depending on seasonal availability, production schedules and supplier inventory. Certain varieties may only be offered for a limited time based on their natural growth cycle, sowing period or available stock. These product pages are designed to help and inspire gardeners in choosing the right seeds for vegetable gardens, flower beds, pollinator gardens, container growing, naturalization projects and sustainable outdoor spaces.
