Red 'Reisetomate' Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum), Offered by Ferme Tourne-Sol

The 'Reisetomate' Red Tomato is a spectacular heirloom variety, recognizable by its deeply segmented, almost sculptural fruits that break apart into small, natural sections . Its name means " traveling tomato " because the fruits can be eaten piece by piece without a knife. Its flavor is tangy , aromatic , and slightly wild, typical of heirloom tomatoes. Very vigorous , productive , and with an indeterminate growth habit, it forms robust plants that produce numerous unique fruits.

Ideal for curious gardeners and lovers of old varieties, it attracts as much by its amazing appearance as by its hardiness.

Type: Heirloom red tomato
Plant growth habit: Indeterminate
Spread: 50 to 70 cm
Plant height: 1.5 to 2 m
Quantity per pack:
Maturity: 75 to 85 days
Companion plants: Basil, garlic, onion, parsley, marigold
Enemy plants: Fennel, potato (similar diseases)

Farming method

The 'Reisetomate' tomato thrives in full sun , in rich , well-drained soil generously enriched with compost. Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost, then transplant when nighttime temperatures exceed 10°C (50°F) . As it is an indeterminate variety, it requires sturdy support , ideally a trellis or reinforced cages, as the fruits can become quite heavy.

Space the plants 50 to 70 cm apart to improve air circulation and reduce the risk of disease. Water regularly, always at the base of the plant, to limit moisture on the foliage. Mulch helps to stabilize moisture and prevent mildew.

Uses and benefits

The 'Reisetomate' tomato is perfect for eating fresh , as its segments separate easily, making it fun to eat and a favorite at picnics , vegetable platters , and summer snacks . It adds a spectacular visual touch to composed salads , rustic dishes , and creative presentations . Its slightly acidic flavor also makes it interesting in sauces , chutneys , and stews, where its heirloom character shines through. Rich in antioxidants , vitamin C , lycopene , and minerals , it contributes to a healthy diet while offering a unique taste and visual experience.
