Joyful Hearts Floral Harmony (Tulipa spp.). Joyful Hearts brings together twelve fragrant double tulip bulbs in a warm palette of soft pink, raspberry, and velvety coral. The very full blooms, composed of rounded, overlapping petals, are reminiscent of old roses or small peonies. The upright stems reach approximately 45 cm (18 in) and bear the flowers in mid-spring above broad, lance-shaped, bluish-green foliage. These tulips belong to the genus Tulipa, family Liliaceae. Planted in groups, they create a generous display in a border, a romantic bed, or a large container. Plant Joyful Hearts from September to November when the soil has cooled but is still workable.
Choose full sun or light partial shade and fertile, loose, well-drained soil. Place the bulbs point up 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in) deep and space them 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5 in) apart. Water after planting to settle the soil, then let seasonal precipitation maintain moderate moisture. In pots, use a drilled, deep, frost-resistant container. Avoid waterlogged depressions and nitrogen-rich fertilizers. Group planting highlights the pink-raspberry-coral progression while maintaining useful air circulation.
After flowering, remove spent blooms before seed formation, but allow all leaves to yellow naturally. This maturation recharges the bulbs and improves their chances of returning, even though many double tulips put on their most generous display in the first year. Install Joyful Hearts near an entrance, along a pathway, or in a pot visible from the house. Pair it with white muscari, cream tulips, Anemone blanda, and silvery foliage. A few stems can be cut, leaving enough leaves. Very double flowers sometimes offer fewer accessible resources to pollinators. All parts, especially the bulbs, are toxic if ingested.
