Floral Harmony Licorice Twist (Tulipa spp.). Licorice Twist brings together fourteen tulip bulbs in a refined contrast of bright cream and purple so deep it appears almost black. The large, single cup-shaped flowers open together in mid-spring on sturdy 40 to 45 cm (16 to 18 in) stems. Their slightly bluish-green, broad, lanceolate foliage forms an understated base beneath the buds. These tulips belong to the genus Tulipa, family Liliaceae. Planted in groups, they create a play of light and shadow in contemporary beds, graphic borders, and containers. The straight stems are also suitable for elegant bouquets.
Plant Licorice Twist from September to November when the soil has cooled but is still workable. Choose full sun or light partial shade and fertile, loose, well-drained soil. Place the bulbs tip up 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in) deep and space them approximately 10 cm (4 in) apart. Water after planting to settle the soil, then let seasonal rainfall maintain moderate moisture. In pots, use a deep, frost-resistant container with drainage holes. Avoid soggy depressions and nitrogen-rich fertilizers. Group planting maximizes the cream-black contrast while ensuring good air circulation.
After flowering, remove faded flowers before seed production, but allow all leaves to yellow naturally. This maturation recharges the bulbs and improves their chances of returning, even if many horticultural tulips perform best in their first year. Group Licorice Twist near an entrance, along a pathway, or in a large pot visible from the house. Pair it with blue muscari, white tulips, purple alliums, and silvery foliage. A few stems can be cut, leaving enough leaves on each plant. All parts, especially the bulbs, are toxic if ingested.
