Merlot Moment Floral Harmony (Tulipa spp.). Merlot Moment combines sixteen tulip bulbs in a dramatic palette of velvety burgundy, vibrant yellow, and wine red. Some flowers are deep purple, while the bicolored tulips feature red flames on a golden background. The large, single blooms open in mid-spring on stems about 35 cm (14 in.) tall. Their bluish-green foliage forms a sober base beneath this intense color. These tulips belong to the genus Tulipa, family Liliaceae. The blend creates a focal point in a bed, a short border, or a container. Its straight stems are also suitable for contrasting bouquets.
Plant Merlot Moment from September to November when the soil has cooled but is still workable. Choose full sun or light partial shade and fertile, loose, perfectly drained soil. Place the bulbs with the pointed end up 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in.) deep and space them 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4 in.) apart. Water after planting to settle the soil, then let rainfall maintain moderate moisture. In pots, use a pierced, deep, and frost-resistant container. Avoid waterlogged depressions and nitrogen-rich fertilizers. Group colors rather than aligning bulbs to achieve a natural contrast and a visually generous bloom.
After flowering, remove spent flowers before seed production, but allow all leaves to yellow naturally. This maturation recharges the bulbs and improves their chance of returning, even though many horticultural tulips perform best in their first year. Install Merlot Moment near an entrance, along a walkway, or in a large pot visible from the house. Pair it with white grape hyacinths, ivory daffodils, near-black tulips, and silvery foliage. A few stems can be cut, leaving enough leaves on each plant. All parts, especially the bulbs, are toxic if ingested.
