Pineapple Express Floral Harmony (Tulipa spp.). Pineapple Express combines sixteen double tulip bulbs in a vibrant palette of golden yellow, bright orange, and burnt red. Their very full, many-petaled flowers resemble small peonies and open in mid-spring. Stems reach approximately 50 cm (20 in) above broad, lance-shaped bluish-green foliage. These tulips belong to the genus Tulipa, family Liliaceae. Planted in groups, they create a warm focal point in beds, flamboyant borders, and sunny containers. The upright stems are also suitable for generous bouquets, where the three colors maintain a luminous contrast. Plant Pineapple Express from September to November when the soil has cooled but is still workable.
Choose full sun and fertile, loose, well-drained soil; light partial shade is still possible in hot locations. Place bulbs with the point facing up, 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in) deep, and space them 10 to 12 cm (4 to 5 in) apart. Water after planting to settle the soil, then let seasonal rainfall maintain moderate moisture. In pots, use a perforated, deep, and frost-resistant container. Avoid waterlogged depressions and nitrogen-rich fertilizers. A location protected from winds helps the heavy double flowers stay upright.
After flowering, remove spent flowers before seed production, but allow all leaves to yellow naturally. This maturation recharges the bulbs and improves their chances of returning, even if many cultivated tulips perform best in their first year. Install Pineapple Express near a patio, along a pathway, or in a large pot visible from the house. Pair it with blue muscari, cream tulips, and soft green foliage. For bouquets, pick stems when the buds begin to show color and leave enough foliage on each plant. All parts, especially the bulbs, are toxic if ingested.
