Starlight Floral Harmony (Tulipa spp.). Starlight brings together twelve assorted tulip bulbs (calibre 12/+) to create a multi-colored late spring bloom. The cup-shaped flowers rise on straight stems reaching approximately 55 cm (22 in), above broad, lanceolate green foliage. These horticultural cultivars belong to the genus Tulipa, in the family Liliaceae. Their height adds presence to flower beds, deep borders, and large containers. Planted together, the tulips create a balanced bouquet effect without needing to know each cultivar in the mix. The stems can also be cut when the buds show their color. Plant Starlight from September to November in cooled, fertile, loose, and perfectly drained soil.
Choose full sun or light partial shade, preferably sheltered from strong winds that can knock over the long stems. Place each bulb point up 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in) deep and space them about 10 cm (4 in) apart. Water after planting to settle the soil, then let seasonal precipitation maintain moderate moisture. In containers, use a deep, drained, frost-resistant pot. Arrange the twelve bulbs in an irregular group to naturally distribute the assorted colors and maintain good air circulation.
After flowering, remove spent flowers before seed formation, but allow the foliage to yellow completely. This maturation allows the bulbs to replenish their reserves, even if many horticultural tulips put on their best show in the first year. Install Starlight at the back of a border, near a fence, or in a large pot visible from the house. Combine it with muscari, white daffodils, or late-emerging perennials that will then conceal the dormant leaves. For bouquets, cut a few stems, keeping enough leaves on each plant. All parts, especially the bulbs, are toxic if ingested.
