Tulip and grape hyacinth mix (Tulipa and Muscari) ‘Sunny Days’ is a 16-bulb assortment combining double yellow tulips with blue grape hyacinths for a coordinated mid-spring display. The tulips are densely petalled and almost peony-like, producing bright yellow masses above blue-green foliage. At their base, compact blue-violet grape hyacinth clusters add contrast and structure to the composition. The planting reaches approximately 40 cm (16 in) overall and uses two complementary heights to create depth. This luminous combination is especially effective in spring scenes where colour, volume and rhythm are desired from a single coordinated bulb mixture.
This mixture prefers full sun to partial shade and light, fertile, well-drained soil. In Quebec, plant the bulbs in fall, ideally from September to November before the ground freezes. Because it combines tulips and grape hyacinths of different bulb sizes, adjust planting depth for each type, generally between 80 and 120 mm, and space them approximately 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4 in) apart. Water lightly after planting, then moderately during active spring growth. After flowering, allow the foliage to yellow and dry naturally so the bulbs can replenish their stored energy. Grape hyacinths may gradually naturalize where growing conditions remain favourable and drainage is consistently good.
This combination is ideal for sunny beds, bright borders, contemporary gardens and spring containers. For a stronger layered effect, place grape hyacinths slightly in front of the tulips or arrange them as a low ring around the taller bulbs. The yellow and blue flowers combine well with white tulips, silver foliage and airy perennials that take over later in spring. Grape hyacinth flowers are particularly attractive to bees and other pollinating insects during bloom. Plant 'Sunny Days' from September to November in cool, fertile, loose, and very well-drained soil. Choose full sun or light shade. Since not all bulbs are the same size, plant tulips about 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in) deep and muscari 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4 in) deep, keeping 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4 in) between groups. Water after planting to settle the soil, then let seasonal precipitation maintain moderate moisture. For pots, use a deep, drained, frost-resistant container. Arrange muscari in front of the tulips or in a circle to emphasize the layering of the two heights. After flowering, remove the faded tulip blossoms, but allow all the foliage to yellow completely. This maturation allows the bulbs to rebuild their reserves. Muscari can multiply gradually when the site remains well-drained, while many horticultural tulips offer their best display during the first few years. Install 'Sunny Days' near an entrance, along a pathway, or in a pot visible from the house. White tulips, primroses, and silvery foliage enhance its yellow and blue contrast.
