Hosta 'Vulcan' (1plant)
Hosta 'Vulcan' (Hosta) forms a compact clump with remarkable foliage. Each oval leaf features a pure white center surrounded by a wide, dark green margin with yellow-green streaks. The plant reaches about 55 cm (22 in) with its flower stalks and spreads to about 90 cm (35 in), according to the Van Noort product sheet. In summer, pale lavender flowers rise above the variegated foliage. This perennial from the Asparagaceae family brings light to shady areas, under shrubs or along a sheltered pathway, where its bright borders remain clearly visible without exposure to scorching sun. This hardy perennial is particularly suitable for cool beds, landscaped undergrowth, and containers placed out of direct sunlight. Its variegated foliage creates a lasting bright spot.

Growing method
Plant plant No. 1 in spring in fertile, humus-rich, cool, well-drained soil, placing the crown near the surface. Choose bright partial shade or open shade; soft morning sun may be suitable, but white centers easily burn in direct afternoon rays. Space plants 75 to 90 cm (30 to 35 in) apart to allow the large mound to develop without covering its neighbors. Water deeply after planting, then maintain regular moisture during rooting and dry periods. Organic mulch keeps the soil cool but should remain slightly away from new shoots and the crown. In spring, remove debris before new leaves emerge and add a thin layer of compost. Monitor for slugs and snails as soon as shoots unfold, especially after rain. Cut back spent flower stalks if you do not wish to keep the seed pods, then let the foliage nourish the crown until it yellows in autumn. Divide overcrowded clumps in spring or late summer. Combine 'Vulcan' with ferns, purple heucheras, pink astilbes, and shade sedges. Hosta contains saponins that are toxic to dogs and cats; prevent ingestion.
Soil and care
Soil & care
Soil pH
Approximately 6.0 to 7.5
Watering
Water deeply after planting, then regularly for the first few weeks. Maintain consistent moisture during leaf unfurling and warm periods, especially when container-grown. Allow the surface to dry slightly between waterings, without letting the root ball dry out completely. Direct water towards the soil in the morning so that leaves dry quickly and the crown does not remain soggy. Pay particular attention to young plants.
Soil type
Fertile, humus-rich, cool, and well-drained soil, capable of retaining consistent moisture without becoming waterlogged around the crown. Incorporate mature compost before planting if the soil is poor. In heavy clay soil, loosen a wide area and improve the structure with organic matter. Avoid very dry substrates under trees with aggressive roots. Drainage must remain consistent in all seasons.
Fertilization
Feed the plants, taking into account the richness of the soil and any previous applications. Soil that has been regularly amended does not require the same care as potting soil used throughout the season. If you use a fertilizer, follow its dosage and application method, without using multiple products. Avoid concentrated applications against the roots or storage organs. Observe growth before reapplying fertilizer: adding more fertilizer does not guarantee more flowers.

Cut faded flower stalks if you do not wish to keep the seed pods, then let the foliage nourish the crown until it yellows in autumn. Divide overcrowded clumps in spring or late summer. Pair 'Vulcan' with ferns, purple heucheras, pink astilbes, and shade carex. Hosta contains saponins toxic to dogs and cats; prevent ingestion. Throughout the seasons, observe new shoots, soil moisture, and stem condition. A durable label helps locate the planting during its dormancy. Clean tools after cutting diseased parts and remove debris that degrades around the base.
Container growing
Container growing
Container culture requires foreseeing the necessary volume for the roots and the plant's final height. Choose a stable pot with drainage holes and a substrate suitable for planting. Leave enough space to respect the recommended depth and spacing, rather than crowding plants to fill the pot immediately. Place the container in the indicated exposure and regularly check the humidity, especially in hot or windy weather. A pot is more exposed to temperature variations than an in-ground planting. Therefore, plan an overwintering location from the start that is compatible with the plant's needs and your region's climate. In winter, protect the container according to the plant's needs: its roots are more exposed to cold than in the ground.
Bloom and dimensions
Size, flowering & harvest
Bloom period
In mid to late summer, whitish stalks bear pale lavender funnel-shaped flowers just above the foliage. Weather and stage of development at the time of planting can affect the appearance of the flowers. Watch for the buds to open to enjoy the flowering at its best. After the flowers, keep the foliage green to allow the plant to complete its cycle.
Garden associations
Companion plants & uses
Companion plants
To accompany Hosta 'Vulcan', consider plants chosen for compatible exposure and water needs. Select neighboring varieties based on their height, flowering period, and the colors you wish to combine. Above all, ensure their exposure and water requirements are suitable for the same location. Maintain enough distance so that leaves do not obscure young shoots and to allow easy access to each plant for maintenance. These associations are for composing the garden's aesthetic; they do not guarantee protection against pests or diseases. Adjust the layout after observing one growing season.
Garden use
Hosta 'Vulcan' can serve as a starting point for a composition where the flowers remain clearly visible. Choose its location based on its announced height and the available space around neighboring plants. A repeated group gives continuity to the flowerbed, while a spot near a pathway allows for appreciation of the flowering details. Maintain a passage for care and consider the foliage after the flowers. Planting thus integrates into a setting that you can maintain without disturbing or crushing other plants.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How to successfully plant Hosta ‘Vulcan’?
Plant 'No1' in spring in fertile, humus-rich, cool, well-drained soil, with the crown near the surface. Choose bright partial shade or open shade; gentle morning sun may be tolerated, but white centers burn easily in direct afternoon sun. Space plants 75 to 90 cm (30 to 35 in) apart to allow the wide mound to develop without covering its neighbors. Water deeply after planting, then maintain regular moisture during rooting and dry periods. Organic mulch keeps the soil cool but should be kept slightly away from new shoots and the crown.
What light should I provide for Hosta 'Vulcan'?
The recommended exposure is semi-shade. Observe the light at the chosen location in the morning and afternoon, as the shade from trees or buildings changes throughout the day. Also consider neighboring plants: their foliage can obscure a young planting as it develops. If in a container, place the pot where you can move it if conditions become too hot or too shady. Suitable exposure must go hand in hand with appropriate soil and watering. If you move a plant started indoors to the outdoors, gradually accustom it to garden conditions to avoid too abrupt a transition for young leaves.
How to adjust watering?
Water according to the actual soil moisture, taking into account rain, heat, and wind. Check below the surface before deciding on further watering: soil that is dry on the surface may still be moist at the root level. Direct the water to the base and allow it to penetrate, without keeping the plant in saturated soil. Containers generally require more frequent checks because they dry out faster. Make sure their drainage holes remain clear and empty any saucers that hold water. Also, adapt care to the plant's cycle: active growth and a dormant period do not require the same amount of water.
What to plan for a container culture?
Growing in containers requires planning for the volume needed for the roots and the plant's final height. Choose a stable pot with drainage holes and a substrate suitable for planting. Leave enough space to respect the recommended depth and spacing, rather than crowding plants to fill the pot immediately. Place the container in the indicated exposure and regularly check the moisture, especially in hot or windy weather. A pot is more exposed to temperature variations than a plant in the ground. Therefore, plan from the outset for a wintering location compatible with the needs of the plant and the climate of your region.
What care should be provided after the growing season?
In spring, remove debris before new leaves emerge and add a thin layer of compost. Monitor for slugs and snails as soon as shoots unfurl, especially after rain. Cut spent flower stalks if you don't want to keep the seed pods, then let the foliage feed the crown until it yellows in autumn. Divide overcrowded clumps in spring or late summer. Pair 'Vulcan' with ferns, purple heucheras, pink astilbes, and shade sedges. Hosta contains saponins that are toxic to dogs and cats; prevent ingestion. Keep a durable label to easily locate this plant during its dormancy.
