Camassia Leichtlini Alba

White Camas (Camassia leichtlinii ‘Alba’) is an elegant bulbous perennial admired for its tall spikes of pure white, star-shaped flowers with soft green centres that bloom from May to June. Known botanically as Camassia leichtlinii 'Alba', this refined variety produces graceful flower spikes above blue-green, strap-like foliage, adding height, lightness, and brightness to late spring gardens. Growing 60 to 90 cm (24 to 36 in) tall, Camassia leichtlinii Alba forms dense clumps that remain attractive for several weeks and naturalize readily under suitable conditions. Hardy to Zone 4, it returns reliably in Quebec gardens when planted in well-drained soil.

Plant the bulbs in autumn before the ground freezes, 12 to 15 cm (5 to 6 in) deep and spaced 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) apart. Choose a location in full sun or partial shade with rich, loose, neutral to slightly alkaline soil that remains moist during spring. Water after planting, then maintain even moisture throughout active growth without allowing the soil to become waterlogged. A moderate application of compost or a balanced fertilizer in spring encourages abundant flowering. After blooming, allow the foliage to yellow naturally before removing it so the bulbs can replenish their energy reserves for the following season.

Camassia leichtlinii 'Alba' is an excellent choice for naturalized gardens, wildflower meadows, borders, and pond edges. Its luminous flower spikes combine beautifully with daffodils, ornamental alliums, Siberian irises, forget-me-nots, and ornamental grasses to create graceful spring displays. The nectar-rich flowers attract bees and many other beneficial pollinators, making this variety an excellent addition to wildlife-friendly gardens. The tall flower spikes also make exceptional cut flowers with excellent vase life. Although Camassia leichtlinii Alba is admired for its ornamental beauty, it is grown exclusively for decorative purposes and is not intended for consumption.
