Sowing & germination
Growing method
Plant in spring when the ground has thawed, is well-drained, and sufficiently warmed. Choose full sun and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Prepare accessible rows for maintenance, then plant the seed tubers with the sprouts facing upwards. As they grow, mound soil around the base to keep new tubers protected from light. Water regularly when the soil dries out, without saturating it. If planting in containers, ensure sufficient depth to progressively add growing medium and keep drainage holes clear so that excess water can drain away. Harvest carefully so as not to damage the tubers with your tools. Set aside any damaged ones and prioritize consuming potatoes whose skin is still delicate. To store a mature harvest, choose a dark, cool, and airy place that protects the tubers from light. The plants sold here are for planting; only harvested, healthy, and non-greened tubers should be consumed after cooking. Do not eat the leaves, stems, sprouts, or berries. Also, check the condition of potatoes during storage to remove any that are deteriorating.
Soil and care
Soil & care
Watering
Keep the soil consistently moist during potato growth and tuber bulking. Water at the base when the soil surface begins to dry out, taking rainfall into account. Moisten the root zone without allowing water to stagnate, and avoid alternating between complete drying out and saturation. In pots or grow bags, check moisture more frequently, especially in hot weather. Reduce watering when the foliage naturally yellows as harvest approaches.
Soil type
For potatoes, opt for loose, fertile, and well-drained soil that is easy to work around the tubers. Check drainage after rain: water should be able to exit the root zone. Work the soil when it is no longer waterlogged to avoid compacting it. Adjust amendments to its actual texture. In containers, use an appropriate potting mix and a pot with drainage holes. Keep these openings clear and prevent any water accumulation in the saucer.
Fertilization
Adjust fertilization to your soil's richness and your crop's needs. A soil analysis helps in choosing the necessary inputs before planting. Respect the dosage indicated on your fertilizer packaging and measure the quantity before applying it. Take into account compost and other inputs already applied to avoid fertilizing the same plant twice. Distribute the product according to its instructions for use; avoid any concentrated contact with roots or storage organs. Applying more does not guarantee a better harvest.
Seasonal care
Plant in spring when the ground is thawed, workable, and sufficiently warm. Choose full sun and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Prepare accessible rows for maintenance, then plant the tubers with the sprouts facing upwards. As they grow, mound soil around the base to protect new tubers from light. Water regularly when the soil dries out, without saturating it. If planting in containers, ensure sufficient depth to progressively add substrate and keep drainage holes clear so excess water can escape. Harvest carefully to avoid damaging the tubers with your tools. Set aside any damaged ones and prioritize consuming potatoes with fragile skins. To store a mature harvest, choose a dark, cool, and airy place that protects the tubers from light. The plants sold here are for planting; only healthy, ungreened, harvested tubers are consumed after cooking. Do not eat the leaves, stems, sprouts, or berries. Also, check the condition of the potatoes during storage to remove any that are degrading. Regularly observe growth and soil moisture throughout the season. Remove diseased waste and clean your tools before working on another planting. When harvesting, handle the edible parts with care to limit injuries that can accelerate their degradation.
Container growing
Container growing
To grow potatoes in containers, choose a deep, sturdy pot or a grow bag designed for this purpose. The drainage holes should allow excess water to drain without the growing medium escaping. Leave room to add soil around the base as the stems develop: new tubers must remain protected from light. Place the container in a sunny spot where you can easily water it. Check the moisture level below the surface during growth, as the available soil volume dries out faster than a garden row. Water regularly when the soil dries out, without saturating it. In containers, ensure sufficient depth to gradually add growing medium and keep the drainage holes clear so that excess water can drain.
Bloom and dimensions
Size, flowering & harvest
Bloom period
Potatoes can flower during their growth, but the presence of flowers varies depending on the variety and growing conditions. The absence of flowering does not necessarily mean that no tubers are forming. Above all, observe the development of the foliage and respect the harvest period adapted to the variety. The flowers and small berries that may follow are not to be eaten. Edible harvesting concerns healthy, non-greened, cooked tubers.
Garden associations
Companion plants & uses
Companion plants
Install neighboring crops at a sufficient distance so as not to hinder maintenance or block the light necessary for this planting. Compare their mature height and water needs before sharing the same space. Keep paths clear for watering and harvesting without damaging the leaves. Companion planting in the vegetable garden should primarily facilitate care and efficient use of space; it does not guarantee protection against diseases or pests. Clearly separate different varieties with labels to easily identify each one at harvest time and track your results over the seasons.
Garden use
This crop is suitable for a vegetable garden where you want to monitor a variety from start to harvest. Keep it well-identified and plan for access for watering, maintenance, and harvesting without trampling the plants. The edible parts obtained after cultivation can then be prepared according to your usual cooking habits. Take into account the space required for the mature plant when choosing its location. A simple organization, with clear pathways, facilitates care throughout the season and allows you to compare your results with those of other cultivated varieties.

Edible parts
Tubers harvested healthy and not greened, after cooking; exclude sprouts, leaves, stems and berries
Herb-Roasted Potatoes. Use healthy potatoes from your harvest, ensuring they are not green and have no sprouts. Wash them thoroughly, remove any damaged parts, and cut them into similar-sized pieces so they cook evenly. Toss them with a little oil, salt, pepper, and herbs of your choice, such as thyme or rosemary. Spread them in a single layer in a dish or on a baking sheet, without overcrowding. Roast them in the oven until the outside is golden and the flesh is tender when pricked. Turn the pieces during cooking to brown several sides. Serve with vegetables, a salad, or your main course. You can add fresh chives just before serving. Adjust the cooking time according to the size of the pieces and your oven. This recipe uses tubers harvested from the garden, never plants sold for planting, leaves, berries, or sprouts.
Frequently asked questions
Frequently asked questions
How to successfully plant 'Yukon Gold' potatoes?
Plant in spring when the ground is thawed, well-drained, and sufficiently warm. Choose full sun and loose, fertile, well-drained soil. Prepare accessible rows for maintenance, then plant the tubers with the sprouts facing upwards. As they grow, mound soil around the base to keep the new tubers protected from light. Water regularly when the soil dries out, without saturating it. If planting in containers, ensure sufficient depth to progressively add substrate and keep the drainage holes clear so that excess water can drain away.
What kind of light does 'Yukon Gold' potato need?
The recommended exposure is full sun. Observe the light in your chosen spot in the morning and afternoon, as the shade from trees or buildings changes throughout the day. Also, consider nearby plants: their foliage can obscure a young planting as it develops. If in a container, place the pot where you can move it if conditions become too hot or too shady. Suitable exposure must go hand-in-hand with proper soil and watering. If you move a plant started indoors to the outdoors, gradually accustom it to garden conditions to avoid too abrupt a transition for young leaves.
How to adjust the watering?
Water according to the actual soil moisture, taking into account rain, heat, and wind. Check below the surface before deciding to water again: a dry surface can still be moist at root level. Direct water to the base and let it penetrate, without keeping the plant in saturated soil. Containers generally require more frequent checks because they dry out faster. Make sure their drainage holes remain clear and empty any saucers that retain water. Also, adapt care to the plant's cycle: active growth and a dormant period do not require the same amount of water.
What should be planned for container growing?
Container growing requires planning for the necessary root volume and the plant's final height. Choose a stable pot with drainage holes and a suitable planting medium. Leave enough space to respect the recommended depth and spacing, rather than crowding plants to immediately fill the pot. Place the container in the indicated exposure and regularly check the moisture, especially in hot or windy weather. A pot is more exposed to temperature variations than planting in open ground. Therefore, plan from the outset for a wintering location compatible with the plant's needs and your region's climate.
What care should be provided after the growing season?
Harvest carefully so as not to damage the tubers with your tools. Set aside any damaged ones and eat potatoes with fragile skins first. To store a mature harvest, choose a dark, cool, and airy place that protects the tubers from light. The plants sold here are intended for planting; only harvested, healthy, non-green tubers can be eaten after cooking. Do not eat the leaves, stems, sprouts, or berries.
