description
White eggplant 'Bianca Tonda' (Solanum melongena), offered by the seed company Weston Seeds
The 'Bianca Tonda' white eggplant is a traditional Italian variety producing beautiful, round, pale white fruit. Very tender and sweet, its classic egg shape makes it ideal for stuffing, but it also lends itself to a wide variety of culinary preparations. Its fine texture and delicate flavor make it a sought-after choice for both home gardens and gourmet kitchens.
Height: 60 to 85 cm
Spacing: 30 to 35 cm
Sowing: Indoor or direct sowing
Exposure: Full sun
Quantity per packet: 200 seeds, untreated, non-GMO
Cultivation method:
Start sowing indoors about 10 weeks before the last frost. Soak the seeds overnight before sowing. Germination ideally occurs at 27°C (81°F); once emerged, keep the seedlings at around 23°C (73°F) under a good light source. Harden them off gradually, then transplant them into full sun once all risk of frost has passed. Plant them 60 cm (24 in) apart in rows 90 cm (35 in) apart in fertile, organically rich soil. Water regularly and fertilize lightly with a low-nitrogen fertilizer. In late summer, pinch off the new flowers three to four weeks before the first expected frost to concentrate the plant's energy on ripening the existing fruit. A ripe eggplant has a shiny skin that does not spring back when lightly pressed.
