Organic green summer cabbage 'Bronco' (Brassica oleracea var. capitata), offered by the seed company WH Perron

The organic 'Bronco' green summer cabbage is a robust and very reliable mid-early variety, prized for its well-formed, round, and firm heads , weighing between 1.8 and 2.2 kg . Its waxy green leaves offer better natural protection against insects, while also contributing to excellent disease resistance. The flesh is crisp , juicy , and has a pleasantly sweet taste , ideal both raw and cooked.

Adapted to summer crops, 'Bronco' is distinguished by its consistent growth and its ability to produce uniform cabbages even in varying conditions. It is perfectly suited to family vegetable gardens as well as more intensive cultivation. Its good post-harvest quality also allows for temporary storage in a cool place.

Cultivation method:

The summer cabbage 'Bronco' can be sown directly outdoors at the end of May , or started indoors 4 to 5 weeks before the last frost for an earlier harvest. Well- hardened seedlings can tolerate a light frost after transplanting.

This variety requires fertile, humus-rich, well-drained soil with an ideal pH between 6.0 and 6.5 . Consistent moisture is essential, especially after transplanting and during dry periods. Plant in full sun or light partial shade . Plant at a depth of approximately 6 mm , then thin to 30–45 cm in spacing between plants in rows approximately 61 cm apart to allow for full apple development.

Growing tips:

Crop rotation is essential for growing cabbage. It is recommended to wait at least three years before replanting cabbage or any other brassica in the same spot. Regular applications of compost and mulch can help retain moisture and suppress weeds.

Harvest :

Harvest the cabbages when the apples are firm . Cut at the base with a clean knife. The apples keep well in a cool, dark place for gradual use.
