Sow seeds indoors 6-8 weeks before the last frost, in rich, well-drained potting soil. Maintain a temperature of 72-80°F (22-26°C) to encourage rapid germination in 7-14 days. Transplant seedlings when they are 2-3 inches (5-7 cm) tall, into individual pots.

Transplant seedlings to the garden after the last frost, in full sun, in rich, well-amended soil. Space seedlings 2 to 3 feet apart and support them with stakes or cages because of their vigorous growth. Water regularly without wetting the foliage to limit disease.
