White Birch - Iconic and versatile tree

White Birch (Betula papyrifera) seeds , offered by the OSC seed company

Native to Canada, the white birch , also known as the paper birch , is a majestic and durable tree. It is known for its bright white, easily peeled bark, which has served many traditional uses. Often reaching heights of 15 to 25 m in a landscape, this tree is valued for its year-round beauty and hardiness in northern climates.

In addition to its visual appeal, it is a pillar of First Nations culture. Its bark was once used to make canoes, containers, and even as a writing or drawing surface. Its wood is prized for furniture and crafts. Ideal as a specimen tree or to create a landscape contrast. However, white birch prefers cooler climates and its lifespan may be reduced in warmer regions (zone 6 and above).

Additional information:

  • The bark is naturally water resistant, which explains its use for canoes.
  • Catkins, unique floral structures, attract birds and add extra interest in spring.

How to grow:

Natural stratification occurs outdoors in winter, allowing seeds to germinate in spring. Sow 6mm deep directly into the ground in autumn to take advantage of this process.

Indoor Stratification: Mix the seeds with a moist, peat-based potting mix, place in a ventilated container, and then refrigerate for 12 to 20 weeks. Alternatively, freeze the seeds in a similar mix for 2 months, then expose to 70°F to encourage germination.

Germination is sometimes slow and can take up to 30 days. Transplant the seedlings to their final location when they are well rooted, ideally in moist, well-drained soil.

The white birch thrives in sun and cool climates. Once established, it becomes an iconic and durable tree, perfect for enriching gardens and landscapes.

The availability of our seeds varies depending on seasonal availability, production schedules and supplier inventory. Certain varieties may only be offered for a limited time based on their natural growth cycle, sowing period or available stock.
