description
Organic 'Japanica Striped Maize' (Zea mays var. japonica) from seed producer Gaia, an ornamental flint maize with spectacular variegated leaves
'Japanica Striped Maize' is a dazzling heirloom variety, grown primarily for its unique variegated foliage : vibrant stripes of green , white , yellow , and pink that brighten the vegetable garden as well as its ornamental appeal. The ears produce burgundy kernels with dark purple silks , further enhancing its decorative appeal. While it is mainly valued for its aesthetics, the kernels can be ground into flour or used for popcorn . Spacing the plants at least 15 cm apart will achieve the most striking color contrast on the foliage.

Farming method
Sow directly when the soil temperature reaches 19°C (66°F) . Place the seeds 2.5–5 cm (1–2 inches) deep. Grow in full sun (level 3) with consistent watering (level 3). Space plants 20–25 cm (8–10 inches) apart (15 cm (6 inches) minimum for good color) and rows 60–90 cm (24–35 inches) . As with all corn, sow in blocks for good pollination. Germination takes 5–8 days at temperatures between 15–32°C (59–90°F) (optimum 29–90°C).
Harvesting and preservation
Harvest when the silks are dry , the kernels are plump and firm , and their burgundy color is well developed. To dry the ears: fold the husks towards one end of the ear, gather several together, tie with string, then hang in a dry, well-ventilated place for a few weeks.
