Organic romaine lettuce develops well-formed, elongated heads composed of long, thick, ribbed leaves . The outer leaves are a deep , dark green , while the heart is a lighter shade and particularly crisp . Grown in cool weather, it offers excellent stability and a firm structure. Farming method
Sow directly in the garden once all risk of frost has passed and the soil temperature is between 5 and 27°C . Lightly press the seeds and cover with about 1.3 cm of fine soil , then water gently. Space the seedlings 2.5 cm apart in rows 45 cm apart, then thin to 20 cm between plants when the seedlings have 2 to 3 pairs of leaves.
Keep the soil consistently moist , with about 5 cm of water per week . Grow in full sun for optimal growth. Sow successive batches every 3 weeks until August for continuous production. Thinned seedlings can be eaten as young leaves .
Harvesting and preservation
Maturity is reached between 65 and 85 days , when the buds are well-formed and firm. Harvest by cutting the base of the plant early in the morning to preserve freshness and crispness .
The leaves can be kept in the refrigerator for several days. For best texture, wash and dry the leaves just before use.
