Organic common oregano (Origanum vulgare) from McKenzie Seeds, an aromatic, robust, and indispensable perennial herb in the kitchen

Organic common oregano is a classic perennial herb , prized for its warm, intense aroma and fragrant small green leaves . Essential in tomato-based sauces , it is also delicious with vegetables , meat stuffings , Mediterranean dishes, and Italian and Spanish recipes. The plants form a compact, well-branched clump , ideal for both gardens and containers .

Very easy to grow and undemanding , oregano prefers sunny conditions , poor but well-drained soil , and tolerates drought very well once established . It attracts butterflies and pollinators , while being resistant to deer, rabbits, diseases, and pests . Regular pruning, by pinching the tips, encourages bushy growth and prolongs the harvest. The leaves can be picked at any time for fresh use.

Farming method

Start seeds indoors 6 to 8 weeks before the last frost . Sow 3 mm deep in light potting soil, press down gently, and maintain moderate moisture until germination, which usually occurs in 7 to 21 days . Oregano germinates slowly; avoid overwatering.

After all risk of frost has passed, gradually harden off the young plants before transplanting them into the garden or into pots. Place them in a sunny location, sheltered from excessive moisture. Space the plants about 30 cm apart to allow for good air circulation and optimal growth.

Oregano grows very well in containers , provided excellent drainage is ensured. Moderate watering, equivalent to 2.5 to 5 cm of water per week , is sufficient.

Harvesting and maintenance

Harvesting can begin approximately 90 days after sowing . Cut the stems as needed, preferably before flowering , for maximum aromatic intensity. Regular pinching encourages a denser, more productive plant. The leaves can be used fresh or dried , as oregano retains its flavor very well after drying.
