Once all risk of frost has passed, gradually harden off the seedlings before transplanting them into the garden. Transplant when the soil temperature reaches at least 18°C ( 64°F), in a sunny , sheltered location. Space the plants approximately 45 cm ( 18 in) apart, with rows spaced 60 cm (24 in) apart. As the branches are relatively brittle, it is recommended to install a cage or stake at planting time.
Regular watering, equivalent to 2.5 to 5 cm of water per week , promotes uniform growth and quality fruit.
Harvesting and maintenance
The fruit ripens approximately 65 to 70 days after transplanting . It can be harvested yellow for a sweet flavor or left on the vine until it turns red , at which point its sugar content is at its peak . Regular harvesting encourages continued production.
