Fall Fiesta® sugar maple (Acer saccharum ‘Bailsta’) is the ‘Bailsta’ cultivar, a large shade tree selected for vigorous growth, a broad oval symmetrical crown and durable foliage. Thick, glossy, dark-green leaves show good resistance to wind tatter and leaf scorch. In autumn, the crown develops a bright mixture of orange, red and yellow. Compact and strongly branched while young, the tree eventually forms a full silhouette approximately 15.2 m tall and 12.2 m wide. This selection is rated Zone 4 and requires a spacious site. Fall Fiesta sugar maple is intended to mature as a substantial landscape tree, not a compact ornamental.
Across Canada, grow Fall Fiesta® in full sun or light shade and deep, fertile, evenly moist, well-drained soil, preferably with a slightly acidic reaction. Keep the root flare visible, position the graft union above grade and apply 5 to 8 cm of mulch without touching the trunk. Water the expanding root zone slowly through the first two growing seasons and during prolonged drought. Once established, this cultivar handles heat, wind and occasional drought better than many sugar maples, but it is not suited to waterlogged ground, compacted urban pits, alkaline fill or road-salt exposure. Protect the root zone from traffic and excavation.
Reserve Fall Fiesta® for large Canadian yards, parks and properties where its canopy can provide generous shade without meeting overhead wires, buildings or paving. Small yellowish-green spring flowers are followed by paired samaras. Because the species is indigenous to eastern Canada, the canopy, flowers and seeds can support insects, birds and small mammals, although ‘Bailsta’ remains a horticultural selection. Prune mainly to remove dead, damaged or crossing wood and to establish sound branch unions while young. Avoid topping: correct placement and ample permanent space are the most effective forms of long-term care for this full-sized sugar maple.

Water slowly and deeply after planting and regularly through the first two growing seasons. Moisten the entire root ball and expanding root zone without keeping soil saturated. An established Fall Fiesta® tolerates dry spells better than a typical sugar maple, but still benefits from irrigation during prolonged drought. Check beneath mulch before watering and adjust frequency to rainfall, temperature and the site’s actual drainage.
Soil type
Choose deep, fertile, organic-rich, evenly moist, well-drained soil. Slightly acidic loam supports establishment, although the tree accepts different textures when air and water move properly. Avoid waterlogged or heavily compacted ground and root systems trapped beneath extensive pavement. Bloom period
Small yellowish-green flowers appear in drooping clusters during spring, generally in April or as leaves unfold. They are inconspicuous and are not the principal ornamental reason for choosing ‘Fall Fiesta®’. Their value is mainly seasonal and ecological. Flowering depends on tree age, weather and condition, and may be followed by the paired winged samaras characteristic of sugar maple later in the same growing season.
Fruiting
Paired winged samaras develop after flowering and generally mature in late summer or autumn. They are not the principal ornamental feature of ‘Fall Fiesta®’, but add a characteristic maple texture and may feed some birds and small mammals. Using the complete identity prevents confusion with a generic seedling or another maple sold mainly for autumn colour. A genuine Fall Fiesta® tree should carry the ‘Bailsta’ identification. This cultivar was selected for its broad symmetrical oval crown, thick glossy leaves, vigour and orange, red and yellow fall colour. Samaras will not reproduce every feature of this named clone faithfully, so seedlings arising from them should not be identified or sold under the same cultivar and trade names.
