Shelling Peas (Pisum sativum) – Offered by Ferme Tourne-Sol

The shelling pea is a classic and essential variety in the vegetable garden, producing large, tasty kernels enclosed in fleshy green pods . Unlike snow peas, only the well-formed kernels are eaten , offering a tender texture and a mild, sweet flavor . Easy to grow and very productive, it produces a bountiful harvest and is ideal for freezing or canning , to enjoy its freshness long after the season.

Plant height : 50 cm to 1.5 m depending on the type
Quantity per pack : 40 seeds
Maturity : Approximately 65 to 80 days

Cultivation method

Shelling peas are easy to grow in full sun or partial shade , in light, well-drained soil enriched with compost . They are sown directly in the ground as soon as the soil can be worked in the spring , about 4 to 6 weeks before the last frost , because they tolerate cold well. Sow the seeds 2-3 cm deep , in rows spaced 40 cm apart, then thin the plants to 5-7 cm to encourage good growth. If the variety is climbing, install a trellis or support to support the stems. Regular watering is recommended, without excess, to avoid diseases and obtain very tender peas. Harvest takes place in 65 to 80 days , when the pods are well swollen and the grains have reached full maturity.

Use and benefits

Shelling peas are delicious fresh, just shelled , or steamed, pureed, in soups and as an accompaniment to stews. They can also be frozen or canned for use throughout the year. Naturally rich in plant-based protein, fibre and vitamins B and C , they are an excellent food for a healthy and balanced diet.

With its easy growth, sweet taste and versatility in cooking , shelling peas are a sure bet for any gardener looking to harvest fresh, flavorful peas.
