description

The Italian tomato Solanum lycopersicum 'San Marzano' is an emblematic organic heirloom variety, recognized worldwide for the exceptional quality of its fruits and its deep connection to the great Italian culinary tradition. In the garden, it exhibits vigorous indeterminate growth and produces an abundance of long clusters of elegant, regular brick-red tomatoes that ripen generously under the sun. Its elongated fruits, with firm, dense flesh, contain few seeds and very little juice, making it one of the best processing tomatoes for sauces, preserves, and homemade tomato paste. Its sweet, rich, slightly tart flavor adds beautiful depth to stewed dishes and Mediterranean-inspired recipes. With good staking and rich, well-drained soil, it richly rewards the gardener with an abundant and continuous harvest throughout the season. Its presence in the vegetable garden evokes late summers full of heavy baskets, steaming pots, and carefully prepared provisions for the colder months. We particularly like to harvest them when fully ripe, still warm from the sun, to make sauces of great aromatic intensity. Both heritage, productive, and essential in the kitchen, 'San Marzano' remains a benchmark Italian tomato for gourmet gardeners.
