Anemone 'Mix' (Anemone blanda)
Anemone blanda ‘Mix’
Discover the plant
Grecian Windflower Mix (Anemone blanda ‘Mix’) produces a charming carpet of blue, pink, and white star-shaped flowers as early as March and April. Rising above finely divided, fresh green foliage, the blooms bring colour, freshness, and lightness to the garden just as spring begins to awaken. Reaching only 10 to 15 cm in height, this tuberous perennial fits easily into small spaces and gradually naturalizes where conditions are favourable. Hardy to Zone 4, it reliably returns in Quebec gardens and creates a bright, natural-looking spring display.
Plant the tubers in fall at a depth of approximately 5 cm, spacing them 5 to 8 cm apart. Soaking the tubers in lukewarm water for a few hours before planting helps rehydrate them and encourages faster establishment. This anemone prefers full sun to partial shade and light, humus-rich, perfectly drained soil with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH. Water lightly after planting, then keep the soil evenly moist during spring growth without allowing it to become waterlogged. After flowering, allow the foliage to turn yellow naturally so the tubers can replenish their reserves before entering dormancy.
Ideal for rock gardens, open woodland gardens, borders, naturalized lawns, and containers, this anemone creates beautiful spring displays when planted in groups. It pairs beautifully with crocuses, snowdrops, grape hyacinths, squills, and dwarf daffodils, which share its early flowering season and natural appearance. Its flowers also provide an important nectar source for early pollinators, especially bees. As the colonies gradually spread, they form a colourful, long-lasting, low-maintenance seasonal groundcover over the years.
