Capitaine Lido Calla Lily (Zantedeschia ‘Capitaine Lido’) is a rhizomatous perennial distinguished by its elegant, cup-shaped bright yellow flowers delicately highlighted with orange at the base. Carried on slender stems, the blooms stand out beautifully against glossy green foliage that may be lightly spotted, enhancing the plant’s exotic appearance. Its generous flowering period, from June to August, brings warmth and brightness to summer displays. Reaching 45 to 60 cm in height, it forms a refined silhouette that is equally attractive in the garden or in a vase. Hardy only to Zone 10, it must be protected from frost in Quebec.
Plant the rhizomes in spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Choose a location in full sun or partial sun with rich, fertile, evenly moist, and perfectly drained soil. Lay the rhizomes flat, 8 to 10 cm deep, and space them 30 to 40 cm apart. Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture without allowing the soil to become waterlogged. An annual application of compost and a balanced fertilizer every two weeks encourage abundant flowering. Before the first frost, lift the rhizomes and store them in a cool, dry place.
‘Capitaine Lido’ calla lily is ideal for summer flower beds, borders, patios, large containers, and bouquets. For container growing, use a pot at least 30 cm in diameter with excellent drainage. Its yellow and orange tones pair beautifully with begonias, cannas, caladiums, coleus, and coral bells to create vibrant tropical displays. Known for their excellent vase life, the flowers add a sunny touch to floral arrangements and may also attract some pollinators. They are grown exclusively for ornamental purposes and are not intended for consumption.
