Captain Promise Calla Lily (Zantedeschia ‘Captain Promise’) is a rhizomatous perennial distinguished by its cup-shaped flowers in deep purple with rich plum undertones. Their occasionally lighter margins accentuate their elegant form and give the blooms a modern, sophisticated appearance. Glossy green foliage, often marked with small white spots, creates a striking contrast with the dark flowers. From June to August, the plant reaches approximately 45 to 60 cm in height and brings a refined presence to summer displays. Hardy only to Zone 10, it must be protected from frost under Quebec conditions.
Plant the rhizomes in spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed sufficiently. Choose a location in partial sun or partial shade with rich, fertile, evenly moist, and perfectly drained soil. Lay the rhizomes flat, 8 to 10 cm deep, and space them 30 to 40 cm apart. Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture without allowing the soil to become waterlogged. An annual application of compost and a balanced fertilizer every two weeks encourage abundant flowering. Before the first frost, lift the rhizomes and store them in a cool, dry place.
‘Captain Promise’ calla lily is ideal for summer flower beds, borders, patios, large containers, and bouquets. For container growing, choose a pot at least 30 cm in diameter with excellent drainage. Its plum-purple flowers pair beautifully with begonias, cannas, caladiums, coleus, and coral bells to create tropical displays rich in contrast. Valued for their excellent vase life, the blooms add depth and refinement to contemporary floral arrangements. They may also attract some pollinators. However, the flowers are grown exclusively for ornamental purposes and are not intended for consumption.
