Mercedes Calla Lily (Zantedeschia ‘Mercedes’) is a rhizomatous perennial distinguished by its luminous cherry-red, cup-shaped flowers held on long, elegant stems. Their vibrant colour contrasts beautifully with glossy green foliage, often marked with small pale spots, giving the plant an exotic yet refined appearance. From June to August, its generous blooms bring warmth, energy, and bold colour to summer displays. Reaching 45 to 60 cm in height, it forms a slender silhouette that immediately draws attention. Hardy only to Zone 10, it must be protected from frost in Quebec.
Plant the rhizomes in spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed. Choose a location in full sun or partial sun with rich, fertile, evenly moist, and perfectly drained soil. Lay the rhizomes flat, 8 to 10 cm deep, and space them 30 to 40 cm apart. Water regularly to keep the soil consistently moist without allowing it to become waterlogged. An annual application of compost and a balanced fertilizer every two weeks support vigorous growth. Before the first frost, lift the rhizomes and store them in a cool, dry place.
‘Mercedes’ calla lily is ideal for summer flower beds, borders, patios, large containers, and bouquets. For container growing, use a pot at least 30 cm in diameter with excellent drainage. Its cherry-red flowers pair beautifully with begonias, cannas, caladiums, coleus, and coral bells to create colourful tropical displays. Valued for their excellent vase life, the blooms add warmth and intensity to contemporary floral arrangements. They may also attract some pollinators. However, the flowers are grown exclusively for ornamental purposes and are not intended for consumption.
