Australis Canna Lily (Canna × generalis ‘Australis’) is a spectacular rhizomatous perennial valued as much for its dramatic foliage as for its vibrant flowers. Also known as Canna Australis, this striking variety produces broad, glossy leaves in a deep purple-brown shade that appears almost chocolate-black. Its bold, sculptural form can reach approximately 150 cm (5 ft) in height. From July to September, brilliant red-orange flowers rise above sturdy stems, creating a striking contrast against the dark foliage. This combination of colour brings warmth, depth, and tropical character to summer landscapes. Hardy only to Zone 10, it must be protected from frost in Quebec.
Plant the rhizomes in spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed thoroughly. Position them horizontally, approximately 10 cm (4 in) deep, and space them 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20 in) apart. Choose a location in full sun with rich, fertile, organic, evenly moist, and well-drained soil. Water generously throughout the growing season to maintain consistent moisture without allowing standing water. Regular applications of compost and a balanced fertilizer every two weeks encourage vigorous growth and abundant flowering. Proper care of Canna Australis also includes lifting the rhizomes before the first frost and storing them in a cool, dry place over winter.
Canna Australis is ideal for creating a dramatic focal point in tropical flower beds, large containers, patios, and contemporary gardens. For container growing, choose a pot at least 45 cm (18 in) in diameter and maintain generous, consistent watering. Its nearly black foliage pairs beautifully with caladiums, alocasias, coleus, dahlias, and ornamental grasses to create lush, high-contrast displays. The summer flowers attract a variety of pollinators and may also be used in selected floral arrangements. However, they are grown exclusively for ornamental purposes and are not intended for consumption.
