Durban Variegated Canna Lily (Canna × generalis ‘Durban’) is a spectacular tropical perennial distinguished by its striking foliage blending shades of green, bronze, purple, and orange. Its large variegated leaves create a vibrant display that remains highly ornamental long before the flowers appear. From July to September, brilliant orange flowers rise above the foliage on tall, slender stems, enhancing its exotic appeal. Its rapid growth and vigorous habit, reaching approximately 120 cm (48 in) in height, bring structure, warmth, and tropical character to summer landscapes. Hardy only to Zone 10, this variety must be protected from frost in Quebec.
Plant the rhizome in spring after all danger of frost has passed and the soil has warmed thoroughly. Choose a location in full sun to maximize the intensity of the foliage colours and encourage abundant flowering. Position the rhizome horizontally approximately 10 cm (4 in) deep in rich, fertile, organic, evenly moist, and perfectly drained soil, spacing plants 40 to 50 cm (16 to 20 in) apart. Water generously to maintain consistent moisture without allowing the soil to become waterlogged, and apply a balanced fertilizer every two weeks. Remove spent flowers regularly, then lift the rhizomes before the first frost and store them in a cool, dry place until the following spring.
‘Durban’ canna lily is an outstanding focal point for tropical flower beds, generous borders, exotic gardens, and large containers measuring at least 45 cm (18 in) in diameter. On a patio or near an entrance, its multicoloured foliage provides spectacular visual interest throughout the season. Pair it with caladiums, alocasias, coleus, begonias, or ornamental grasses to create lush plantings rich in texture and contrast. Its bright orange flowers attract a variety of pollinators and may also be used in summer floral arrangements. However, this variety is grown exclusively for its ornamental value, and its flowers are not intended for consumption.
