Bleeding Heart (Dicentra spectabilis) is a classic shade-loving perennial admired for its romantic blooms and naturally graceful habit. From May to June, vivid pink heart-shaped flowers, each tipped with a delicate white teardrop, dangle from elegant arching stems above finely divided, fresh green foliage. Reaching 60 to 80 cm (24 to 32 in) in height, it forms an elegant clump that brings movement and charm to woodland gardens and spring perennial borders. Exceptionally hardy to Zone 3, it easily withstands Quebec winters and returns reliably each year when grown in suitable conditions.
Plant the rhizome in spring or autumn at a depth of 3 to 5 cm (1 to 2 in) in rich, humus-rich, consistently moist, and well-drained soil. Choose a location in partial shade or bright shade, protected from the hot afternoon sun, and space plants 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 in) apart. Keep the soil evenly moist throughout the growing season without allowing it to become waterlogged, as excessive moisture can lead to rhizome rot. A spring application of compost and a light mulch help retain soil moisture. After flowering, allow the foliage to yellow naturally before removing it.
Bleeding Heart is an excellent choice for shade gardens, open woodlands, cool borders, and romantic or natural-style perennial beds. Pair it with hostas, ferns, coral bells, astilbes, and lungworts to create richly textured plantings that continue to provide interest after its foliage enters dormancy in early summer. Its graceful spring flowers attract bees and other pollinators and are also valued in cut flower arrangements. However, the flowers are grown strictly for ornamental purposes and are not intended for consumption. Long-lived and easy to grow, this perennial brings elegance, movement, and timeless beauty to shaded landscapes.
