Crocosmia 'Lucifer'

Lucifer Crocosmia (Crocosmia × crocosmiiflora ‘Lucifer’) is a spectacular corm-forming perennial renowned for its long, arching flower spikes covered with brilliant scarlet-red blooms. From July through September, the flowers open gradually above upright, narrow, medium-green, sword-like foliage, creating a display that is both exotic and architectural. Growing 80 to 100 cm (32 to 40 in) tall, this striking plant adds movement, height, and vibrant colour to summer landscapes. Hardy to Zone 5, it returns reliably in Quebec gardens when planted in well-drained soil and provided with adequate winter protection.

Plant the corms in spring once the soil has warmed and all danger of frost has passed, 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4 in) deep. Space them 10 to 15 cm (4 to 6 in) apart in light, fertile, organic-rich, well-drained soil. A location in full sun produces sturdy stems and abundant flowering, although light partial shade is also tolerated. Water regularly to keep the soil evenly moist without allowing standing water, then apply compost or a balanced fertilizer in spring. Allow the foliage to yellow naturally before cutting it back so the corms can replenish their energy reserves.

Lucifer Crocosmia is outstanding in perennial beds, borders, and naturalistic gardens, where its vivid scarlet flowers create a dramatic focal point. Pair it with coneflowers, black-eyed Susans, perennial salvias, and ornamental grasses to create vibrant summer displays rich in colour and texture. Its nectar-rich flowers are especially attractive to hummingbirds, bees, and butterflies, making it an excellent choice for supporting garden biodiversity. The long flower spikes are also superb for cut flower arrangements and have excellent vase life. In colder regions, protect the corms with a thick layer of mulch or lift and store them in a dry, frost-free location for winter.
