Discover the plant
White Siam tulip (Curcuma alismatifolia) develops an elegant tropical clump of long glossy-green leaves and stems topped with ivory-white bracts. Small pinkish true flowers appear discreetly between the bracts, whose firm texture keeps each inflorescence decorative for several weeks. Under steady warmth, the display generally extends from June through September. Plants reach 60 to 80 cm (24 to 32 in) tall and about 30 cm (12 in) wide. The Van Noort package contains 1 rhizome. Hardy only in Zone 10, it requires completely frost-free winter storage in Quebec and cannot remain outdoors through cold weather.
Start the rhizome in spring in rich, airy potting mix kept warm, setting it 5 cm (2 in) deep with buds upward. Bright light with morning sun or luminous partial shade protects foliage better than scorching midday exposure. During growth, keep the mix regularly fresh without standing water and feed at half strength every two weeks after emergence. Space plants 25 to 30 cm (10 to 12 in) apart. Wait until nights remain above 10°C (50°F) before moving outside. In autumn, reduce water as foliage yellows, then store the rhizome dry and frost free in a dark, ventilated place.
In a container, White Siam tulip brightens a terrace, sheltered entrance, or tropical garden corner through white cones and broad foliage. Pair it with ferns, green caladiums, begonias, and tender grasses sharing its preference for warmth, regular moisture, and drainage. Long-lasting stems suit restrained bouquets, where their geometry contrasts with soft foliage. Small true flowers may receive a few pollinating insects while the plant remains outdoors. This ornamental form of Curcuma alismatifolia is not culinary turmeric; do not eat any part. Bring the container inside before cold nights to preserve the rhizome for another warm season.
