Discover the plant
‘Bolt’ pompon dahlia (Dahlia) captivates with its perfectly spherical, bright pale yellow, almost cream-coloured flowers, composed of short, tightly folded petals. Their dense and regular texture creates a neat and refined silhouette, beautifully highlighted by dark green foliage. From July until the first frosts, this variety reaches approximately 70 cm (28 in.) in height and offers abundant blooms that bring softness and clarity to summer arrangements. Not hardy in Quebec, this tender perennial is grown as an annual, but its tuber can be dug up in the fall and stored in a frost-free environment during winter.
Plant the tuber in spring, once all risk of frost has passed, about 10 cm (4 in.) deep in rich, loose, compost-enriched, and well-drained soil. Choose a full sun location receiving at least six hours of direct light per day, then space plants 30 to 40 cm (12 to 16 in.) apart. Water lightly until shoots appear, then keep the soil uniformly moist without saturating it. Pinch young stems to encourage a more branched and floriferous plant, then regularly remove faded flowers. In the fall, dig up the tuber and store it in a cool, dry, and frost-free place.
The ‘Bolt’ dahlia is perfect for borders, flower beds, large containers, and cutting gardens. Its cream-yellow flowers combine harmoniously with salvias, cosmos, yarrows, Verbena bonariensis, and ornamental grasses to create luminous and balanced scenes. Their regular shape and excellent vase life make them an ideal choice for elegant and long-lasting bouquets. Its blooms can also attract various pollinators during the summer. Petals from untreated plants can be used to decorate desserts or salads.
